Châteaux: between heritage, vineyards and architecture
The Gironde is a land of castles. Medieval fortresses, Renaissance residences, grand cru classé wine estates, and 19th-century bourgeois houses... Here, the stones tell the story of centuries of history, architecture, and landscapes.
But more than buildings, they are complete, living, often inhabited settings, set between vineyards, forests and rivers.
Some are monumental and spectacular, others more confidential, hidden behind a pine-lined path or an old mossy gate. There are lounges, cellars, towers, ramparts, old kitchens, monumental staircases, Mansard roofs, moats... So many possibilities for filming indoors and outdoors.
OUR FAVORITES
Castles of Libourne
In the Libournais region, the castles combine blond stone and vineyards as far as the eye can see. The castle of La Rivière, perched above the Dordogne, impresses with its proportions and its location. Vayres Castle, it looks towards the river with its French gardens, its moats, its richly furnished rooms. These places combine heritage, wine and landscape - an obvious cinematic triptych.
Castles of South Gironde
South Gironde is full of historic castles with strong architecture. Roquetaillade, we enter a fairy tale setting, between medieval walls and interior decorations signed Viollet-le-Duc. Cazeneuve Castle, former property of Henri IV, borders a stream, in the hollow of a wooded valley.
In La Brède, it is Montesquieu's birthplace, surrounded from moat to water and open meadows. And to Villandraut, we discover a ruined castle, powerful and mineral, with its collapsed towers and its appearance of a natural cinema set.
Medoc castles
In the Médoc, wine châteaux are also architectural signatures. Château Malleret, on the outskirts of Bordeaux, displays its classical façade in the middle of a park with rare species. Kirwan Castle, in Margaux, combines discreet elegance and Grand Cru spirit. Here, the wine structures the landscape: rows of aligned vines, modern cellars or old, bridleways, hidden chartreuses... A balance between natural and mastery.
Castles of Entre-deux-Mers
In this vast, hilly region, the châteaux are often more eclectic, more isolated, but just as rich. Château La Ligne, between Créon and Camarsac, is an elegant building nestled between woods and vineyards. L'Isle Fort, meanwhile, seems to have come straight out of a novel: surrounded by water, accessible by a path between the reeds. In Cadillac, the ducal castle, massive and square, dominates the valley and offers an interior decor of great nobilityIn the attic, we discover a former women's prison, established in the 19th century, with its cells and metal doors. A striking contrast between classical grandeur and prison memory.
Filming in castles
Access and preparation
Not all châteaux are open to the public or for filming. Some are private, others are listed, and still others are actively growing wine. It is essential to anticipate permit applications, contact the owners, and respect any restrictions related to conservation, operation, or the season.
The Filming Reception Office can help you establish initial contacts and define technical needs on site.
